Papers assembled by Gavan Schneider relating to his membership of the New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory Divisions of the Australian Democrats during the 1980s. There are papers relating to the history, objectives and policies of the Australian Democrats as well files relating to Schneider's involvement as a member of the National Executive, as National Ballots Administrator and as a director and secretary of the Australian Democrats' companies A.D. Holdings Limited and A.D. Properties Pty Ltd. Other topics covered by the papers include the 1984 and 1987 Federal elections, the 1981 and 1984 NSW State elections, ACT self-government, the development of the Australian Democrats constitution during the 1980s and the expulsion of Senators and members.
Biographical Note:

Gavan Thomas Schneider was born in 1952 and graduated with a Doctorate in Physiology from the John Curtin School of Medicine at the Australian National University. During the 1980s he worked as a medical researcher in the School of Physiology, University of New South Wales.

Schneider was a foundation member of the NSW Division of the Australian Democrats in 1977. While in the NSW Democrats he worked as the campaign director for the Phillip Branch in the 1981 State elections, and served on the NSW Executive Committee, as Membership Officer and a member and convenor of the NSW Constitution Review Committee. He stood unsuccessfully as a candidate for Coogee in the NSW state election in 1984 and served as National Ballots Administrator in 1981-1986.

In 1984 Schneider moved to Canberra where he continued his involvement in the Party as ACT Division President (1986-1988), ex officio member of the National Executive (1986-1988), membership officer (1984-1986), and a member and convenor of the National Constitution Review Committee. In 1986 he was Policy Convenor for science and technology.

Founding member of the Australian Democrats. Schneider held many positions in the party including National Ballots Administrator, member of the National Constitution Review Committee and President of the Australian Capital Territory Division.

The papers were donated to the Library by Gavan Schneider in 1995.
