Background

Biographical Note:

Sidney William Jackson was born at Brisbane on 12 June 1873. He went to school in Toowoomba and Grafton. As a boy he was interested in bird-watching and egg-collecting. On leaving school he worked as a clerk at Grafton and began recreational study of natural history, particularly of birds. His extensive collection of eggs was commenced as early as 1883. Much of his early work was carried out in the Dorrigo and Grafton districts in north-eastern New South Wales, and at Chatswood, near Sydney. Jackson recorded his field expeditions in his diaries.

Jackson described his unique collection of Australian birds' eggs of more than 500 species in Egg collecting and bird life of Australia: catalogue and data of the Jacksonian Zoological collection (1907). He illustrated the book with his own photographs. Jackson also collected material in the fields of conchology (land snails) and botany.

The results of much of his field work were also published in A.J. Cambell Nests and Eggs of Australian Birds (1901) A. J. Campbell and in The Emu (for example his researches into the avifauna of the Barron River Valley in north Queensland.

In 1907 Jackson sold his collection to H. L. White of Belltrees. It formed the basis of the 'H. L. White Egg Collection', which is now housed in the Museum of Melbourne. Jackson acted as curator of the Belltrees Ornithological Collection and the H.L. White Collection of Australian postage stamps for many years. He moved to Sydney after White's death in 1927 and contributed articles to newspapers and journals.

Jackson died in North Sydney on 30 September 1946.
