Background

Content Summary:

The correspondence includes letters written to William James Linton by members of his family and friends and letters to his eldest son William Wade Linton, written by him or other members of the family.

See the Name Index of Correspondence, (under Related Documentation) for a correspondence index.

Some of the booklets and pamphlets were written and/or printed by W.J. Linton, while others were concerned with subjects (mainly politics and poetry) in which he was interested. His notes are rough drafts of some of his poetry. There is also a report of the Peoples International League (Nov 15th 1847) of which W.J. Linton was the secretary.

Biographical Note:

A wood-engraver and poet, William James Linton (1812-96?) was also involved in advocating republican principles in the English Republic, a monthly magazine, and the Leader, a London weekly newspaper, both of which he started. About 1867 he went to America where he later set up his private press in a farm-house called 'Appledore' in the township of Hamden just outside New Haven, Connecticut. On this press he printed Windfalls, a collection of some 200 extracts from imaginery plays, a memoir of his friend James Watson in 1879; a small collection of translations in verse from Victor Hugo and Beranger in 1881; Golden Apples of Hesperus: Poems not in the collections in 1882; In Dispraise of a Woman; Catullus with variations in 1886; Love-Lore in 1887; and The Masters of Wood-Engraving. The Plaint of Freedom, anonymously issued in 1852, was also written by him.

For a list of family life dates, see item 336 (folder 9)
