Content Summary:

During the course of his career, David Martin corresponded with many well-known writers, a number of whom became close friends, and this correspondence is contained in this series. Martin's alphabetical arrangement of the correspondence has been retained. An index to major correspondents can be found in Appendix I (under Related Documentation tab)of this guide.

After 1977, Martin filed all correspondence together and literary correspondence after this date can be found in Series 1, general correspondence.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The main body of David Martin Papers was acquired partly under the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme and partly by outright purchase by the National Library in September 1983. Additional instalments were purchased over the period 1985-97. The papers document the long career of one of Australia's most prolific writers.
