- A children's novel about a young aboriginal boy, Hughie was illustrated by Ron Brooks and published by Macmillan, Melbourne in 1971. The novel received a commendation from the judges of the 1972 Children's Book of the Year. In 1973, Cliff Green wrote a screenplay adaptation of the novel. The book was also published by St Martin's Press, New York in 1971, Blackie, London in 1972 and Mladost, Zagreb in 1975, with the title Tajanstvenazmijapredaka.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The main body of David Martin Papers was acquired partly under the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme and partly by outright purchase by the National Library in September 1983. Additional instalments were purchased over the period 1985-97. The papers document the long career of one of Australia's most prolific writers.
