MS 9223 comprises the following papers: Letters, 1941-1943, written by Goodwin to his family and various documents relating to his war service; diaries, 1943-1944, maps and reports documenting his experiences in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Hong Kong and his escape from the camp in July 1944; notebook, 1942-1946, containing short accounts about the work of the Allied officers in rescuing prisoners from the Japanese prison camp in China; correspondence, 1946, concerning Goodwin's appointment as inspector of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA); correspondence, reports (including handwritten drafts) and meeting minutes, 1946-1947, pertaining to Goodwin's work in China.The subjects include security of unloading and interference with supplies and other problems in Shanghai. The collection also includes papers, 1946-1948, concerning Goodwin's work with the China Relief Mission in China; and other papers, 1944-1980, including newscuttings relating to Goodwin, notes for radio talks in New Zealand, background material for his book Passport to eternity and a manuscript titled 'Fall of Hong Kong' (undated). Also, a published copy of Hong Kong escape and a map of Hong Kong and Canton, showing the route of Goodwin's escape from the prisoner of war camp in Hong Kong to Tamshui in southern China in 1944 (2 boxes).

MS Acc11.085 comprises correspondence and various documents regarding Goodwin's time as a prisoner of war in Hong Kong and the period after his escape from the prison camp in July 1944. Includes letters from the families of his fellow prisoners of war to whom he had written after his escape (3 folders).

MS Acc24.061 comprises a list of Japanese prisoners of war who were in Sham Shui Po POW camp in Hong Kong and handed over to the allies by Ralph Goodwin, documents and black and white photographs relating to Ralph Goodwin's investiture - Officer of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire for outstanding courage, endurance and devotion to duty in 1945, press clippings, a booklet titled "Auckland to Sydney and back on the Teddy Trans-Tasman Yacht Race 1931" by Goodwin for which he was part of the crew for 'Teddy', the yacht which won the first Trans-Tasman race; and correspondence and tributes relating to Ralph Goodwin's passing (4 folders).
