The National Party of Australia was originally formed as the Australian Country Party formed on January 22, 1920, following the 1919 Australian Federal Election, when a significant number of candidates from state Country Party and farm organisations were elected to the House of Representatives. The Australian Country Party changed its name to the National Country Party of Australia in May 1975 before taking its current name, National Party of Australia, in 1982.
