Content Summary:
This collection comprises primarily Ian Manning's working papers, research, theses, reports and consulting paperwork accumulated during his time at the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research in the mid 1980's and beyond. The records relate largely to his work within Victoria, but also his appointment overseas in China and South Africa and include handwritten notes, edited typescripts, tables, maps and research papers. Included are also documents, transcripts and submissions pertaining to the 'Poverty Inquiry' and the National Inquiry into Local Government.
Biographical / Historical:

Dr Ian Manning Australian Economist, 1941-2024.

After graduating from the University of Melbourne, Ian Manning taught economics at Madras Christian College, Tambaram, India, between 1965-1969 specialising in the economics of banking. During this time Manning, a keen trainspotter, took more than 1800 photographs of trains across the country. After his time in India he returned to the Australian National University to complete a doctorate on the economics of town planning, and then worked on social-security policy for the National Inquiry into Poverty. In 1980, he joined the staff at the Melbourne Institute, Melbourne University.

Manning's colleague and fellow economist Peter Brain left Melbourne University In 1984 to found the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (now known as National Economics) with Manning joining him a year later, becoming Deputy Director of the Institute. Manning and Brain continued their work at National Economics collaborating and working independently on projects covering all aspects of the Australian economy, its industries, its regions, and its people, until Manning's death in 2024. In addition to his work across academic institutions, Manning is the author or co author of 17 books published between 1973 and 2017.
