Content Summary:

MS 9061 comprises mainly correspondence, research material and drafts relating to the compilation of Duyker's publications. There are papers relating to Duyker's research into the history of Mauritius and his involvement in Mauritian family history research, including correspondence with genealogists. There is a copy of Gaston Sarre's Recueil de reseignements sur les familles de Lile Maurice, 1945, containing genealogical notes on 3000 Mauritian families. There is also correspondence between Bell, Regnard Co., Melbourne, and Pipon, Bell Co., Mauritius (1853-1855), concerning the importation of Mauritian sugar. A copy of Duyker's PhD thesis Tribal guerillas : the Santals of West Bengal and the Naxalite movement and associated research material is also included (19 boxes, 2 fol. boxes).

The Acc11.016 instalment comprises research material, and Duyker's publications on Mauritius, including photographs, photocopied book extracts and correspondence. Additional research notes relating to other topics of interest, including French maritime history (6 boxes).

The Acc12.070 instalment comprises research notes, files, and correspondence associated with Duyker's biography of Daniel Solander, the Swedish naturalist on Cook's Endeavour, and the collected correspondence of Daniel Solander. The early research material is comprised of photocopies of original material held elsewhere. Various notes relating to other research interests, including photographs relating to Bryan Barnard and Marjorie 'Marja' Barnard, Linnaeus papers, and other material relating to the Endeavour (10 boxes, 1 carton).

The Acc18.142 instalment comprises typescripts and research material for the publications authored (or edited) by Duyker. Titles include "Mauritian Heritage", "The Dutch in Australia", and "Molly and the Rajah". There is material associated with "Woman on the Goldfields: recollections of Emily Skinner", and this includes photographs of Emily Skinner. Other articles, newspaper clippings and photocopies of research material relate to voyagers of the Dutch and French to Australia and the Pacific. Included are files on the Batavia, the Pandora, Le Maire and topics relating to New Zealand such as Maori Studies, Ornithology, Cook and De Surville. There are notes, system cards and photocopies of articlews relating to research for articles published in The Australian Rationalist Quarterly about women in Israel. Some other research files contain, print outs of press releases, reports, posters and stickers pertaining to the campaign to save Recherche Bay, Tasmania, from logging (4 boxes, 2 map folios).

The Acc22.020 instalment comprises various papers relating to Edward Duyker's research for a biography of French explorer, Jules-Sébastien-César Dumont d'Urville (1790–1842). It includes photocopies of Dumont d'Urville' articles, photocopies of the Astrolabe voyage charts containing the Pacific and Australia and photocopies of various correspondence between Dumont d'Urville and historians; a detailed list of archival sources consulted for Edward Duyker's biography of Dumont d'Urville, photocopies of maps and newspaper articles regarding Dumont d'Urville and his hometown, photocopies and transcriptions of published and unpublished letters written by Dumont d'Uville, his wife and his son, diaries, journals, ten separate wallets with photocopies of original maps from Dumont d'Urville's voyages, 'Marion-Dufresne T-shirt' and a print copy of the French edition of "Dumont d'Urville: Explorer and Polymath" (5 boxes, 1 map folio).

Biographical Note:

Edward Adrian Joseph Duyker was born in Melbourne in 1955. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree from La Trobe University, Melbourne, in 1977 and was awarded a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 1981. Duyker was an intelligence analyst for the Joint Intelligence Organisation, Department of Defence, Canberra, and then joined Griffith University, Brisbane as a Teaching Fellow in the Humanities Department. In 1984 he moved to Sydney and began working as a full-time writer. He has been the Chairperson of the Australian Mauritian Research Group since 1983.
