Background

Content Summary:
The H. Otley Beyer Map Collection consists primarily of maps collected by Beyer of the Philippines. The collection includes rainfall, topographic, land-use, language groups, ethnic groups, geological maps and road maps. There are a small number of manuscript maps about ethnic groups and language groups of the Philippines, as well as tektite sites, some of which were authored by Beyer. In addition, a small number of maps have been kept with the Beyer manuscript collection (Papers of H. Otley Beyer, 1850-1964, MS 4877).
Biographical Note:

Beyer was born in Edgewood, Iowa in 1883. Following the completion of a Masters degree in Chemistry from the University of Denver, Colorado, he volunteered to teach in the Philippines. From 1905 he took up his teaching post and also undertook to study the Ifugaos of the Banaue Valley of northern Luzon.

In 1908–09 he carried out research in Asia, North Africa and Europe and undertook graduate studies in anthropology at Harvard University. Returning to the Philippines in 1909, Beyer joined the Bureau of Science as an ethnologist. He carried out fieldwork among the Ifugaos, Igorots, Apayaos, Kalingas and other peoples. In 1914 he joined the staff of the University of the Philippines and established the Department of Anthropology. He became Professor of Anthropology in 1924 and held the position until his retirement in 1954.

Beyer died in the Philippines in 1966.
