The Investigator, with Matthew Flinders in command, left on 18 July 1801 and went to Simon's Bay, Cape Leeuwin and King George's Sound, and then followed the coastline eastward to Port Philip and Port Jackson; she then proceeded in company with the Lady Nelson which was soon sent back, to Cape York, Gulf of Carpentaria, Arnhem Bay and Port Jackson (9 June 1803).

Flinders went home thence as a passenger in the Porpoise.
