Content Summary:
The Australian Joint Copying Project selectively copied papers relating to penicillin, the Royal Society, general correspondence, correspondence relating to pathology, letters of congratulation, lecture files and papers of Lady (M. Ethel) Florey.
Biographical / Historical:

Sir Howard Walter Florey (1898-1968), Baron Florey of Adelaide and Marston (created 1965). Born in Adelaide, educated at St. Peter's College and Universities of Adelaide, Oxford and Cambridge. Professor of Pathology, University of Sheffield, 1931-1935. Professor of Pathology, University of Oxford, and Head of the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, 1935-1962. In 1938-1939 he began a study of the biological and chemical properties of antibacterial substances produced by bacteria and moulds and by 1941 had demonstrated the effectiveness of penicillin in the treatment of human bacterial infection. Florey held many positions and recieved many honors during his life including: awarded Nobel Prize for medicine (with Sir Alexander Fleming and E. Chain), 1945; Provost of Queen's College, Oxford 1962-1968; President of the Royal Society, 1960-1965; Academic adviser, Australian National University, 1940-1957 and Chancellor, Australian National University, 1965-1968. Florey was married twice: (i) 1926. Ethel Reed of Adelaide (died 1966) (ii) 1967 Margaret A. Jennings of Oxford.
