Content Summary:

Correspondence of F.A. Marriott, including letters he and his wife Anne wrote to Marriott's mother, Selina. Subjects include: travels in Australia; resolution of the Protestant Association; defections to the Roman Catholic Church in England; dispute between Lady Franklin and the Gell Family; Sir William Denison; Marriott's preaching and work in Diocese; and matters relating to chaplains and bishops in Australia.

Other correspondents include Charles Marriott and Bishop F.R. Nixon.

Biographical / Historical:

Fitzherbert Adams Marriott (1811-1890) was born in London, educated at Charterhouse and Oriel College, Oxford. Ordained priest 1835 and appointed Rector of Cotesbach, Leicestershire. Selected by Bishop F.R. Nixon as his chaplain, he emigrated to Van Diemen's Land in 1843, and was immediately appointed archdeacon. Marriott visited England in 1845 to raise money for colonial church and accepted office of superintendent of convict chaplains. Appointed chaplain to New Norfolk 1847 he returned to England 1853. Appointed curate of St. Pauls, Knightsbridge, 1854, and Vicar of Chaddesley Corbett, Worcestershire, 1859. In 1848 he married Anne, daughter of Major Charles Schaw, Police Magistrate at Richmond.
