Background

Content Summary:
Journal March-June 1853 of a voyage from London to Melbourne on the immigrant ship Ida describing day-to-day events on the ship and weather conditions.
Biographical / Historical:

Pioneer of the Australian cheese industry. In 1853 Harding accepted a contract with Thomas Mort to establish a cheese factory at Bodalla on the south coast of New South Wales. He was a Wesleyan lay preacher and acted as assistant surgeon on the emigrant vessel Ida. He travelled to England in 1856 but returned to Australia and acquired a large property in Victoria.

Henry Harding (1829-1899) was the son of Joseph Harding (1805-1876), a Somerset cheesemaker known as 'the father of Cheddar cheese'. Henry Harding emigrated to New South Wales in 1853 but returned to England in 1856. In 1860 Thomas Sutcliffe Mort acquired the Bodalla estate on the south coast of New South Wales and by the 1870s butter and cheese were the main products of the estate. Mort engaged Harding as his cheesemaker and together they introduced many of the latest processes to Australia. Harding left Bodalla in 1890.
