Content Summary:

Correspondence concerning administration of New South Wales, Van Diemen's Land and Singapore, referring especially to colonial appointments, land grants, Samuel Marsden and other clergy, recall of Governor Brisbane in 1824-25 and dismissal of J. Gellibrand as Attorney-General in Van Diemen's Land in 1826.

Correspondents include H. Goulburn, R.W. Hay, Wilmot Horton, Lord Hastings and J. Macarthur.

Biographical / Historical:

Henry Bathurst (1762-1834), 3rd Earl Bathurst (succeeded 1794). Tory MP for Cirencester 1783-94. Lord of Admiralty 1783-89, Lord of Treasury 1789-91, Commissioner of Board of Control 1793-1802, President of Board of Trade 1807-12, Foreign Secretary Oct-Dec 1809, Secretary of State for War and the Colonies in the Liverpool Government June 1812-April 1827, Lord President of the Council in the Wellington Government 1828-30.
