Correspondence, letters, memoranda and official papers extending from Gladstone's first post at the Colonial Office in 1835 until the collapse of his third Ministry in 1886. They deal with: the New Zealand Co; Treaty of Waitangi; Maori affairs; recall of Sir John Eardley Wilmot from Van Diemen's Land in 1846; colonial bishoprics; Australian and New Zealand constitutions; Sydney Mint; colonial tariffs; appointment of governors; establishment of settlement at Canterbury; annexation of Fiji and New Guinea; French and German activities in the Pacific; trade with Dutch East Indies; affairs of Sarawak; and North Borneo Co.

Biographical / Historical:

William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898). Born in Liverpool, educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. Tory M.P. 1832-1846. Under-Secretary for War and Colonies 1835. Vice-President of Board of Trade 1841-1843, President of Board of Trade 1843-1845, Secretary of State for War and Colonies in Peel Government December 1845-June 1846. Peelite and later Liberal M.P. 1847-1895. Chancellor of Exchequer in Aberdeen Government December 1852-February 1855. Chancellor of Exchequer in Palmerston and Russell Governments June 1859-June 1866, Leader of the House of Commons October 1865-June 1866. Leader of the Liberal Party 1867-1875, 1880-1894. Prime Minister December 1868-February 1874, April 1880-June 1885, February-July 1886, August 1892-March 1894.
