Content Summary:

Correspondence mostly dated 1841-46, dealing particularly with Anglo-French rivalry in the Pacific, the French annexation of Tahiti, actions of Sir James Brooke in Sarawak, and the Dutch East Indies.

Major correspondents are Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Sir Robert Peel, Lord John Russell, Lord Palmerston, W.E. Gladstone, Lord Derby, Lord Ripon, Sir Charles Bagot, F.P.G. Guizot, Lord Clarendon, Sir James Graham, Lord Brougham, Duke of Newcastle, Sir George Grey, J.W. Croker, Sir Edward Disbrowe, Lord Cowley and Capt. T. Nicolas.

Biographical / Historical:

George Hamilton Gordon (1784-1860), 4th Earl of Aberdeen (secceeded 1801), 1st Viscount Gordon (created 1814).

Educated at Harrow and St. John's College, Cambridge. Took his seat in House of Lords as a Tory peer 1806. Ambassador Extraordinary in Vienna 1813-14. Chancellor of Duchy of Lancaster 1828, Foreign Secretary in Wellington Government June 1828-November 1830, Secretary of State for War and Colonies in Peel Government December 1834-April 1835, Foreign Secretary in Peel Government September 1841-June 1846. After the split in the Conservative Party in 1846 Aberdeen remained a supporter of Sir Robert Peel and after the death of Peel in 1850 he was acknowledged as the leader of the Peelites. Prime Minister, heading a Peelite-Whig coalition ministry, December 1852-January 1855.
