- Biographical / Historical:

Thomas Hassall (1816-1898) was born in Acton, near London. He migrated to Victoria in 1853 and was a blacksmith, storekeeper and owner of the British Hotel in Creswick. He was an extremely wealthy man, despite losses incurred during the financial depression of the 1890s. He was unmarried, but his beneficiaries included a large number of relatives in England, Australia and New Zealand. He also left money to Wesleyan churches and charitable institutions in Ballarat and for the construction of six cottages for the use of 'sober, respectable people', to be called the 'Thomas Hassall Homes'.William Hassall (1824-1889), the brother of Thomas Hassall, was born in Acton and died in Manchester. James Hassall (1850-1918), one of the sons of William and Martha Hassall, migrated to South Australia and owned a house in Parkside in Adelaide. He and his wife Harriet (d. 1917) had six children.
