There are two journals, one covering James Mitchell's first visit to Australia in the Neptune in 1820, the other his second visit in the Guildford in 1822. They do not contain daily entries, but discursive reflections and detailed accounts of travels in New South Wales and Java. There are references to Sir Thomas Brisbane, J.T. Bigge, John Oxley and John Macarthur.
The 1820-21 journal is held in the Divinity Library, New College, Edinburgh University and the 1822-23 journal is in the Special Collections Department, Edinburgh University Library.
