Papers 1858-59 relating to Derby's position as Secretary of State for the Colonies and India. Subjects include Australian Federation and separation of the Straits Settlements from the Government of India.

Papers 1866-68, 1874-78 relating to Derby's position as Foreign Secretary. Subjects include: the Sandwich Islands Treaty (1875); American interest in a Hawaiian protectorate; treaty with Samoa (1878); war in Aceh, Sumatra; Pacific labour trade; and French interest in New Guinea.

Papers 1882-85 relating to Derby's position as Secretary of State for the Colonies. Subjects include: British and German annexation of New Guinea; Australian Federation; representation of natives in New Zealand Parliament; Australian representation on Suez Canal Technical Committee; and Fijian land claims.

Diaries 1882-85. Subjects include: annexation of New Guinea; Monroe Doctrine in Pacific; Australian Federation; offer of Australian troops for Sudan; and Australasian Federal Council Bill.

Biographical / Historical:

Edward Henry Stanley (1826-1893), Lord Stanley (assumed title 1851), 15th. Earl of Derby (succeeded 1869). Son of 14th. Earl of Derby, Prime Minister in 1852, 1858-59 and 1866-67.

Educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Cambridge. Travelled in West Indies, Canada and United States 1848-49 and India and Ceylon 1851-52. Conservative M.P. 1848-69. Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, March-December 1852, Secretary of State for Colonies February-May 1858, President of Board of Control June-September 1858, Secretary of State of India September 1858-June 1859, Foreign Secretary June 1866-November 1868. Foreign Secretary in Disraeli Government, February 1874-March 1878, resigning on account of Government's policy on Eastern question. Secretary of State for Colonies in Gladstone Government, December 1882-June 1885. Leader of Liberal Unionists in House of Lords 1886-91.
