Content Summary:

The four diaries are very detailed, with a full page of small writing often devoted to a single day. There is an entry for virtually every day. The diaries deal primarily with Derby's activities, including his travels around Britain, social events, work at the Colonial Office (December 1882-June 1885), correspondence, meetings of Cabinet and Cabinet committees, public meetings and dinners, debates in the House of Lords, deputations, financial transactions and estate business. To a lesser extent, they record his thoughts and ideas and his assessments of a large number of people, especially those who had just died.

The following list is not exhaustive, but indicates the principal references to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific during Derby's term as Secretary of State for the Colonies.
