Edward White Benson (1829-1896), was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham and Trinity College Cambridge, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1852. He was appointed a Master at Rugby School in 1852 and ordained as Deacon in 1853. He was First Master of Wellington College, 1859-1872, and then Chancellor of Lincoln Minster in 1872. He was appointed Bishop of Truro in 1877 and formed a divinity school there. He was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1882.
