Robert Thomson (1829-1905) was born in Belfast and grew up in Glasgow. He entered the Scottish Amicable Life Assurance Company. In 1849 he migrated to Dunedin, New Zealand, and in about 1853 he moved to Sydney, where he entered the Liverpool and London Fire and Life Insurance Company. In 1854 he became secretary of the Australian Mutual Provident Society and supervised the expansion of its operations in Tasmania and New Zealand. His personal financial difficulties led to his resignation from the A.M.P. Society in 1865. In 1869 Thomson helped establish the Mutual Life Association and was actuary for its Sydney branch. He moved to Melbourne in 1871 and was for many years consulting actuary to the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society. In 1880 he was admitted to the Institute of Actuaries of Great Britain and Ireland. He died in Melbourne.
