Sir Arthur Charles Hamilton Gordon (1829-1912), 1st Baron Stanmore (created 1893). Son of 4th Earl of Aberdeen, Prime Minister in 1852-1855. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Liberal M.P. 1854-1857. Private Secretary to W.E. Gladstone 1858-1859. Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick 1861-1866, Governor of Trinidad 1866-1870, Governor of Mauritius 1870-1874, first Governor of Fiji 1875-80, first High Commissioner of Western Pacific 1877-1882, Governor of New Zealand 1880-82, Governor of Ceylon 1883-1890.
