Correspondence of Sir Joseph Banks, transcribed by Dawson Turner, relating to voyages of the Resolution, Bounty, Discovery and other ships to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

Correspondents include Daniel Solander, Lord Sandwich, Captain James Cook, Captain William Bligh, Lieutenant. Matthew Flinders and George Caley.

All letters to Banks unless stated.

Biographical / Historical:

Dawson Turner F.R.S. (1775-1858) was a banker by profession, a well known botanist and bibliophile. He was acquainted with Banks and proposed by Robert Brown as a suitable biographer for Banks. Accordingly, in 1853, much of Banks' correspondence was made available to him. Realising the work would be extensive, Turner decided to have the papers copied, returning them and the copies to Sir Edward Knatchbull in 1848. After Turner's death his papers were sold by auction and scattered, as were Banks' papers in 1886. However, the Dawson Turner transcripts had been placed in the Botany Department of the British Museum in 1876 for the use of another biographer - where they remain.
