Abstract Or Scope
On 1 July 1988 the Australian Advisory Council on Bibliographic Services (AACOBS) merged with the Australian Libraries and Information Council (ALIC) to form the Australian Council of Libraries and Information Services (ACLIS). A voluntary association, ACLIS represented the interests of more than 900 member libraries and information services, lobbying governments on strategic issues and fostering national cooperation until its disbandment in December 1998. As well as supporting research projects and providing services to members, the Council played a major role in the development of initiatives and services such as the Distributed National Collection, standardised collection policies, collection evaluation (Conspectus), regional networking, the national bibliographic database, interlibrary loans and preservation of library materials.
