The papers comprise poems, reviews, essays, broadcasts, the original manuscript of The seven rivers, transcripts of interviews, the script of Stewart's adaptation of The cenci, inscribed copy of 'The garden of ships', drafts of poems by Roderic Quinn, Robert D. FitzGerald and others and a copy of R.D. FitzGerald's Heemskerck shoals, illustrated by G. Ingleton and published by the Mountainside Press. They also include: correspondence and photographs, some relating to his research on Kenneth Slessor; drafts of book reviews, manuscripts of poems, A man of Sydney, Norman Lindsay: a personal memoir, the script Ned Kelly, the script for the ABC TV adaptation of Hamlet and The broad stream and letters and manuscripts of David Campbell.

The records of the Constitutional Convention include lists of candidates, how to vote information and publications of the Australian Electoral Commission, and other material relating to the electoral process. In the main, however, the collection comprises material collected from delegates to the Constitutional Convention by staff of the National Library, or issued by the Convention Media Centre. A full set of public submissions to the Constitutional Convention are held. In addition a significant quantity of website material, representing delegates and their agents and the product of a variety of media servers is also of interest. An extensive collection of news cuttings covering the period of the Convention is also included.

The collection contains personal files created by him during his term as South African Ambassador to Australia, from 1988 to 1992. The files include general correspondence with the Australian public and various government departments, correspondence regarding Tothill's official visits and engagements, and an extensive collection of letters from the public commenting on his media interviews, speeches and column 'South African Opinion' in the Weekend Australian. There are also numerous requests for the three compilation volumes of his column, David Tothill's South African Opinion I (1990), South African Opinion II (1991) and South African Opinion III (1992).

Ulrich Ellis was Political Secretary to the Federal Country Party Leader from 1928-1936, and the papers in the first consignment particularly cover the formation and history of the Country Party throughout Australia. They include correspondence, pamphlets, policy speeches, minutes of meetings, press cuttings and notes for Ellis's book A History of the Australian Country Party, 1963. They concern Sir Earle Page, Bruce, Lyons and Menzies among others.

A smaller group of papers relate to his World War I service; his time as Headmaster of Canberra Grammar School; his appointment as Chief of the UNICEF Mission to Greece, Italy and Malta and a visit to the United States of America as a delegate to the 9th International Conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations.
