Apart from speeches and cuttings, there are relatively few papers dating from Gorton's early political career. For his three years as Prime Minister there are a number of subject files, a comprehensive set of speeches, press statements and transcripts of interviews, and cutting books, photograph albums and a large number of loose photographs. The later papers include correspondence files extending to about 1995, radio broadcasts, articles for newspapers, and newspaper cuttings.

Most of the Byrne Papers relate to Byrne's Southern Cross Memorial which he commenced in 1932 and his endeavours to have it accepted by the Australian Government and appropriately housed. The Memorial was accepted as a gift by the Government in 1970 and is presently held by the National Museum of Australia. Byrne donated a number of papers to the National Museum including original photographs and newspaper clippings relating to the aviation exploits of Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm.

MS 8648 comprises diaries, correspondence, biographical notes, concert programs, scrapbooks, press cuttings, photographs, music scores, teaching material for the Victorian College of the Arts, speeches and other papers. The papers relate mainly to Dame Joan's career as an opera singer and teacher, but also cover such topics as Presbyterian Ladies' College, Pymble, the loss of Dame Joan's house in the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires, the Australian Opera, Victoria State Opera, golf, and Dame Joan's friendship with Lolita Marriott.

The collection contains correspondence, drafts, typescripts and notes relating to books and articles written by McCarthy. Also included are reviews, radio scripts, diaries of McCarthy and his wife. Some of the correspondents are: Mrs E. Bean, Sir Paul Hasluck, Gough Whitlam, etc. The three main books are: "South-West Pacific area first year: Kokoda to Wau" (vol. 5 of "Australia in the war of 1939-45); "The fate of O'Loughlin" and "Gallipoli to the Somme: the story of C.E.W. Bean".Additional papers document Dudley Mccarthy's professional life as Patrol Officer in Papua New Guinea, Australian Minister to United Nations in New York and as Ambassador to Mexico and Spain and . They include published books, photographs, notes and press clippings along with some childhood and family photographs.

The collection constitutes a rich record of Gowrie's life, from a boy at Eton and young officer of the British Empire, to a 'mature man of affairs' who held several appointments of vice-regal office in Australia. The papers are varied in format and include official and private correspondence, cables, genealogical and biographical papers, legal and financial records, speeches, broadcasts, photographs, newspaper cuttings and memorabilia. Aspects of the life and work of Gowrie's wife, Zara, and their son, Patrick Hore-Ruthven, are also detailed in the papers.
