The collection was transferred to the Library after the death of John (‘Jack’) Tallis, youngest son of Sir George Tallis who lived in the Tallis home ‘Beleura’, Mornington, Victoria. John Tallis died in December 1996 and the papers came to the Library in 1999. Michael Tallis, a grandson of Sir George Tallis, and co-author with Joan Tallis of a biography of him, was also involved in negotiating the transfer of the collection to the Library.

Papers of Sir Henry and Lady Penelope Gullett, 1887-1961

Abstract Or Scope
MS 3078 contains letters written by Sir Henry to his wife Penelope from Europe during the First World War, and Paris during the Peace Conference. There is a small amount of family correspondence including letters from Gullett's children, in particular from Jo and Sue Gullett. Other letters and telegrams congratulate Gullett on his knighthood in 1933, and his appointment to the ministry in 1939. Correspondents include parliamentarians, diplomats and acquaintances in the Armed Forces, and in particular Joseph A. Lyons, Sir Robert Menzies, John Latham, Sir Henry Chauvel, Professor A.E.V. Richardson, Sir Cyril Brudenell White, Lord Gowrie, Sir Archdale Parkhill and Charles Hawker.Some notes from Gullett's early school days, ca. 1889, texts of parliamentary speeches and ministerial statements, newspaper cuttings, personal documents such as passports, letters to Lady Gullett, including one from Sir F. Gavan Duffy, and a large series on the Imperial Economic Conference in Ottawa are also contained in the collection (10 boxes).

The collection is small but includes family correspondence, articles and addresses, papers concerning Jewish affairs between 1942 and 1944, notebooks written whilst a student, script-books, newspaper cuttings, photographs, a Government House visitor's book, regalia, certificates and illuminated addresses. The papers document Isaacs' career as a State and federal politician, judge and as Governor-General of Australia.

Comprises correspondence with missionaries, institutions such as the National Library, collectors and historians concerning his interest in collecting Australiana and in compiling his Bibliography of Australia; family correspondence; files of cuttings, manuscripts, both original and copies; notes and printed items on such topics as local histories, particular events in Australian history, and missionary work in the Pacific Islands; medals; early Australian money; papers relating to his work with the State Library of New South Wales and the Royal Australian Historical Society; and manuscript drafts and galley proofs of his Bibliography of Australia.
