Papers of Damian Smith relating to Sidney Nolan, c.1948-1982

Abstract Or Scope
The collection primarily comprises tins and small envelopes from the estate of Sidney Nolan. Inscribed with "Central Australia 1948", these containers originally housed 35 mm negatives from Sidney Nolan's trip through Central Australia. Note that the negatives themselves are held by the estate of Lady Mary Nolan and do not form part of the National Library's Nolan collections. Damian Smith obtained the containers when he worked as the inaugural archivist for the Sidney Nolan estate. Smith was later assigned the publishing rights by Lady Mary Nolan to Sidney Nolan's photographs from the years 1949-1952. Also included in the collection is a post-production script for the film "Sidney Nolan: an Australian dream" - a co-production between Don Bennetts and the Australian Broadcasting Commission, 1982, which was given to Smith by Don Bennetts.

The collection comprises papers relating to Lynne Murphy, gathered by her over 60 years as a professional actress on stage, radio, television and film, from 1940 to 2004. Lynne Murphy was her professional name. The collection includes letters, typed scripts, annotated scripts, programs, publicity flyers, posters, newspaper cuttings and printed material containing reviews of shows, and photographs from the many theatre, radio, television and film productions in which Lynne Murphy performed and acted. These include radio serials such as Dr Paul, theatre roles with the Metropolitan Theatre, Minerva Theatre, and Sydney Theatre Company, television programs including Number 96 and Homicide, and the film, Kabbarli. Correspondence comprises a large number of congratulatory letters, notes, cards and telegrams, mostly from other performers and friends.

This collection comprises personal letters, manuscripts, and a scrapbook containing cuttings of her short stories that were published, often in the 'Children's Corner' of the Tasmanian Mail. The collection includes her wooden writing slope, personal documents relating to her education, sketches and watercolours, and miscellaneous newspaper clippings. There are also receipts, invoices, and other documentation relating to her only published book Santa Claus and the Shadow. Also included in this collection is the Papers of Percy White, Beatrice's husband. Percy's archive comprises photographs, genealogical research, and correspondence between the family.

Maurice Bramley archive, approximately 1933-1970

This collection of works by Maurice Bramley includes original sketches for magazine covers, comic book covers and short pulp fiction filler stories. Bramley was the primary illustrator for Horwitz Publications, which dominated the Australian comic book market with U.S. reprints of popular war and western titles in the 1950s and Marvel superhero titles in the 1960s. The collection includes the original sketch for Kid Colt, Outlaw – Six guns dig for Gold! Issue no. 121 and sketches for commercial publications such as a small feature on the development of the airline industry. The collection provides an insight into the skilled draughtsmanship of Bramley and more broadly the production of commercial imagery for publication in mid-century Australia. The stories and illustrations also capture the particular sentiments of the popular Australian market. The collection also includes newspaper clippings with examples of Bramley's published work, official movie studio photographs most likely used as inspiration for his illustrations, and copies of seventeen comic books from the 1960s.
