Abstract Or Scope
The papers comprise letters, speeches, speech notes, a diary, a few photographs and some miscellaneous printed items, together with the typescript biography. They form a relatively small and uneven collection. Apart from some speeches and the 1929 diary, they provide little information about Bavin's distinguished career as a New South Wales parliamentarian and Premier. They are, however, an important source on Australian politics and law in the period 1900-1920 and, in particular, document Bavin's close association with the first two Prime Ministers of Australia.

Material in the Geography and Travel ephemera collection covers significant information about the geography, history, and tourist activities of places in Australia, its Antarctic and island territories. This includes geographical features, national parks and reserves, regions, cities, towns, buildings and other man-made structures. The collection includes advertising material, pamphlets, price lists, tokens, area and accommodation guides, brochures, postcards, stickers, labels and tickets.

The papers comprise numbered subject files, many of which were used as the basis for sermons or articles by McKenzie. The files include newspaper cuttings, articles, notes, manuscript and typescript drafts by McKenzie, sermons, Church reports and a small quantity of correspondence. The files relate church matters, Aboriginal missions, John Flynn and to the religious implications of topics including the place of women in society, Cyclone Tracy and other natural disasters and space exploration in the 1950s and 1960s.

The collection comprises papers relating to the Franklin River Blockade, a protest against a decision by the Tasmanian Government to dam the Franklin River to generate hydro-electricity. The protest was coordinated by the Tasmanian Wilderness Society (TWS). The papers are a personal record of the campaign and include trainer materials on facilitation and consensus decision making detailing the internal politics of the campaign, reports, handbooks and information leaflets, meeting notes and agendas, ephemera, pictures, and personal correspondence between family, and campaigners throughout the blockade.

The bulk of the papers relate to Shirley McKechnie's involvement in the development of contemporary dance in Australia. The papers include correspondence, 1966-1996, a report of a 1974 study tour to investigate how dance is incorporated into the education system and a subsequent submission of the State College of Victoria Accreditation Committee, 1977, papers relating to a choreographic workshop at the University of New England, 1976, copies of papers presented at a dance education conference, 1977, papers relating to 'Canon for four dancers' which was choreographed by McKechnie, 1988, a report of a visit to China for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 1992, and papers relating to the first meeting of the Tertiary Dance Council of Australia, 1996. Also included in this collection are papers relating to McKechnie's involvement in the Green Mill Dance Project, 1991-1994, and her long association with both Dame Peggy van Praagh and Peter Brinson. There are posters, programs and brochures, 1956-1972, press cuttings, 1964-1996, photographs, and correspondence. Correspondents include Werdon Anglin, Peter Brinson, Lenton Parr, Gordon van Praagh, Peggy van Praagh, Ian Spink and Janet Vernon.

The material filmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project includes: letters covering Meryon's schooling, English lessons, reading, his interest in a naval career, the death of his mother, his naval service, attendance at the Naval School at Brest, friends, his life at Toulon, experiences in the navy, travels including to New Zealand, financial difficulties, training and artwork, ideas for a novel, experiences during the 1848 Paris revolution, his illnesses and internment at the asylum at Charenton St Maurice (1858-59) and various sketches.

They document Slessor's professional life as a journalist, newspaper and journal editor, official war correspondent, writer of poetry and prose, and his membership of professional associations, the Advisory Board of the Commonwealth Literary Fund and the National Literature Review Board. His personal life is represented by family documents and correspondence, photographs and legal papers relating to family property and his divorce.
