Papers of the Hughes and Knight Gregson families, 1865-1962

Abstract Or Scope
The collection comprises original letters from Charlotte Louise Knight Gregson (nee Hughes) to her family of Middleton Hall, Northumberland, England after she emigrated to Australia in 1876 aged 26. Included are sketches, water colours, shipping documents, school reports and photographs. The letters detail her farming life in Harden, with comments on colonial life including the shearers' strike, suffragettes, 1890s banking crashes and bushfires. There is also mention of men going off to World War I, railway-building, the establishment of Canberra as the capital, and a relative who was part of Mawson's expedititon. Also included are letters from Frank Hughes (Charlotte Louise's brother) to his family, photographs of George Charles Knight Gregson and Frank Hughes, and a death notice and obituary of Stanly Hughes (Frank Hughes's son).

MS 4846 consists largely of the State Secretary's files of correspondence with the A.L.P. Branches in Victoria, the Federal Executive, state and federal parliamentarians, trade unions leaders, publishers, and the public. Included is the personal file of correspondence kept by the A.L.P.'s General Secretary, P.J. Kennelly. The remainder comprises circulars, committee agenda and papers; records of the Victorian Central Executive including roneoed copies of minutes, nomination forms, balance sheets and membership lists, and printed items. Also (1943-1954) Branch records removed when the Party split in 1955. The contents, in the same categories as those listed above, complement this material.

The papers consist of correspondence, reports, plans, specifications, and newspaper-cutting books, photograph albums, official publications and issues of journals. They document Bunning's early work as an architectural writer, records of the architectural firm of Bunning and Madden (1945 and 1976) and papers relating to the official inquiries on planning matters that Bunning undertook in the last ten years of his life. Of special interest are the papers relating to the design and construction of the National Library building, which Bunning regarded as his greatest achievement.
