On 1 July 1988 the Australian Advisory Council on Bibliographic Services (AACOBS) merged with the Australian Libraries and Information Council (ALIC) to form the Australian Council of Libraries and Information Services (ACLIS). A voluntary association, ACLIS represented the interests of more than 900 member libraries and information services, lobbying governments on strategic issues and fostering national cooperation until its disbandment in December 1998. As well as supporting research projects and providing services to members, the Council played a major role in the development of initiatives and services such as the Distributed National Collection, standardised collection policies, collection evaluation (Conspectus), regional networking, the national bibliographic database, interlibrary loans and preservation of library materials.

MS 1884 comprises correspondence, diaries, notebooks, drafts of manuscripts, subject files, press cuttings, pamphlets, souvenirs, printed items, photographs, glass slides and other memorabilia relating to all aspects of General Sir John Monash's life and career. The collection includes juvenilia and items dating from Monash's school and university days. The correspondents include Hannah Victoria Moss (whom he married in 1891), J.T.N. Anderson (business partner), Mathilda Monash (sister) and other members of the Monash family, J.
