Abstract Or Scope
The manuscript of Robert Thomas of Llanfechain, Montgomeryshire, was written in 1863-1864. It covers Thomas's life from his birth in 1836 until 1854, when he was living in Australia. There is also a brief record of his return to Britain in 1862. The bulk of the manuscript deals with his first 18 months in Australia (1852-54) and his experiences on the Victorian goldfields.

The papers consist of photographs and illustrations for a book by Gollan The tradition of Australian cooking which was published by the Australian National University in 1978. The book describes food and cooking methods, the kitchens and gadgets, and the slowly changing culinary traditions of Australians from the early Aborigines and the first days of European settlement to the present. The photographs have been used by the designer in the design and layout of the publication. Many of the images have a caption attached to the back of the photograph and an overlay with the dimensions of the photograph as it appeared in the publication.

Part of the collection comprises letters from Australian writers to Dr. Mackaness, some of them relating to his publication in 1946 of "Poets in Australia: An Anthology of Australian Verse." There are 150 manuscripts by Bulletin writers (1918-1920) in the collection, together with some 800 other manuscripts by Australian writers.

Badges and pin backed buttons mostly donated to the collection by members of the public, including many collected in Adelaide by Mrs Fransine Brown (1904-1991) and her son, the Reverend Peter Brown (1936-2012). They relate to Australian charities, organisations, events, armed forces, public campaigns, patriotic causes and fundraising initiatives, and include badges or buttons commemorating specific events such as Australia's Commonwealth celebrations in June 1911, the 1918 Armistice, Anzac Day 1915, Navy Day 1918, and Empire Day 1946. Includes badges or buttons relating to Australian organisations or people such as the RSPCA, SIDS for Kids, AFL, Red Cross, the Australian Comforts Fund, Legacy, the League of Loyal Women of Australia, the Salvation Army, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Several badges from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s relate to the Vietnam Moratorium and other federal political campaigns.
