Abstract Or Scope
This collection comprises papers spanning the early years and working career of Dr Lowitja O'Donoghue AC CBE DSG, advocate for Australian First Nations people. Much of the collection relates to Dr O'Donoghue's senior roles as chair of Aboriginal Hostels, chair of the Aboriginal Development Commission and of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC). There are reports, papers and correspondence relating to Dr O'Donoghue's extensive and varied involvement in associations and movements for Indigenous health welfare and human rights. There are also biographical papers, photographs, published books and articles, notebooks and diary schedules, loose transcripts and a boxed 3-volume collection of speeches. Also included are commemorative and personal objects from Dr O'Donoghue, such as torches and tracksuits from the Olympics and ParaOlympics, her wedding dress and decorations, as well as plaques of appreciation, honours and awards.

Papers of Verity Burgmann, c. 1956-2022

This collection comprises recordings and papers compiled by political scientist Verity Burgmann. The recordings are of interviews (1970-1994), speeches, meetings and protests of far-left wing activists (1981-2019), conducted by Burgmann and others. Prominent activists interviewed include Frank Hardy, Tom Payne, Lloyd Ross and Mary Wright (87 sound/av carriers) There are papers relating to the Australian Society for the Study of Labour history. These records from the Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney branches are complimented by a run of the Melbourne branch's newsletter 'Recorder', from 1964-2021 (incomplete). Other papers relate to Burgmann's academic life (1982-2020) with two main portions dedicated to applications to the Australian Research Council and other research grant schemes, as well as conferences attended (1979-1989). Burgmann's, working papers for The People's history of Australia, co-edited with Jenny Lee, are made up of correspondence with contributors, publishers and supporters of the project along with financial papers, summary drafts, style guides and charts. There are Burgmann's examiner reports, manuscript assessment and supervision samples from her time at the University of Melbourne as well as special studies program applications.

Correspondents include Henry Mayer, Melanie Beresford, Ann Curthoys and staff of Penguin Books. The collection includes a cuttings book containing press cuttings about Summers and Damned whores and God's police; files of research notes; cuttings; and, correspondence on a wide range of topics including women and poverty, single parents, family, Caroline Chisholm, child care, Aboriginal Australians, rape reform proposals, suicide, women unionists, education, prostitution, racism, Womens' Electoral Lobby, Adela Pankhurst Walsh, women and the media. The collection also includes material relating to the journal Refractory girl and the publication of Her story: Australian women in print 1788-1975. The papers in MS 8328 comprise manuscripts and typescript drafts of Hasluck's novels, poetry, plays and other literary works. In addition, there are letters from publishers, agents and other writers, reviews of his books, files about literary and cultural organisations and a few legal papers. Other material includes manuscripts, typescripts, book reviews and correspondence relating to Hasluck's father, Sir Paul Hasluck. The papers have been organised into nine series. This collection comprises extensive research files for books published by Tim Bonyhady from the 1970s to 2010. Included are copies of newspaper and journal articles; a small quantity of colour photographs, negatives and transparencies pertaining to the Burke and Wills expedition and Colonial art; edited typescripts, handwritten notes, and correspondence with readers and fellow academics. The collection also includes files relating to the environmental law and the Australian Conservation Movement, such as legal documents, scientific studies, assessments, conference papers and review submissions; records relating to the Environment and Natural Resources Committee; and records relating to the Independent Review of the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, along with associated correspondence with members of the task force.

This collection comprises papers of Kevin Thomas Kelly (1910-1994), who was involved with Catholic intellectual life in Melbourne in the 1930's - 1950's. The papers document his education, at De la Salles college, early membership of the Campion Society; his role in establishing the Catholic Evidence Guild and introducing to Australia and fostering the Young Christian Workers (YCW), a movement founded by Belgian priest Joseph Cardijn (Jeunesse Ouvrière Chrétienne de France J.O.C.). Also included are papers relating to the 'Catholic Worker' and 'The Advocate' newspapers; the establishment of the Australian National Secretariat of Catholic Action (ANSCA); correspondence including with James and Sara Scullin, Jacques Maritain, Louise Massignon, Thomas Butler, Owen McCann and Robert Kothen; drafts of the first three chapters of his autobiography titled 'Ballarat', 'Bairnsdale' and 'Malvern'; and books and pamphlets written or edited by Kelly and works on the Young Christian Workers (YCW) in French by Kothen.
