New Australia Colony, Paraguay, May 1985, 1985

Abstract Or Scope
Collection features images relating to the New Australia Colony and Cosme Colony socialist utopian colonies established in Paraguay in 1893 and 1894 by a group of Australians migrants led by William Lane. The photographer, Peter Solness, visited for the month of May in 1985 researching the descendants of the New Australia movement of 1892. It contains a series of portraits of the last Australian born member of the original colony, Don Guillermo (Bill) Wood, his brothers Don Norman Wood and Wallace Wood, Rod McLeaod, who spent his life on the colony, as well as their descendants. Some of their descendants were still living in the colony, with others living in other parts of Paraguay. Bill Wood, Norman Wood and Wallace Wood are the children of William Wood and Lillian Wood, Bill only 8 months when they left Australia. The collection also features views of Camp Cosme, the colony and general scenes of Paraguay. The images and story were published in an article "Ginger Meggs in Paraguay" by Peter Solness in the Good Weekend Magazine, 26 January 1986.
