Abstract Or Scope
The papers, which were mainly accumulated in the last thirty years of Fleming's life, comprise correspondence, personal documents, notes, official papers, speeches, newspaper cuttings, photographs and publications. Although there is little original material on his service in World War II and in the Commonwealth Public Service, there are many papers written or acquired in his retirement relating to earlier phases of his life. The papers deal with journalism, military campaigns in the Middle East and New Guinea, espionage, security, terrorism, international trade, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library and the National Library of Australia.

The material filmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project includes: Papers c.1883-1911 of Charles Grover including notes on Australian life, a sketchbook and reminiscences of his visit to Australia in 1882 in which he referred to the observatories in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, the journey to Jimbour in the Darling Downs, encounters with Indigenous Australians, and the unsuccessful attempt to observe the Transit of Venus in December 1882 with sketches of observatories, Jimbour and Thursday Island; Notes of Sir Cuthbert Peek on journey to Australia in 1882 and observations of southern stars; photographs, postcard and cutting.

The papers document Newton's role as a financial writer for the New York Post and as an adviser to bankers, sharebrokers and politicians, as well as a prolific publicist and columnist. They include correspondence, faxes, diaries, cutting books, photographs, tapes, videos, newsletters and magazines. With the exception of the photograph albums, the papers date almost entirely from Newton's years in America and there is very little on his career in Australia.

The collection contains material assembled by the Plea for Justice Committee and the National Freedom Council in the course of their campaigns to promote justice for Lindy and Michael Chamberlain. The documents were maintained by Mrs Betty Hocking, initially as Co-ordinator of the Plea for Justice Committee, and then as President of the National Freedom Council.
