The Alliance Française was founded in 1883 in Paris as "Association nationale pour la propagation de la langue française dans les colonies et à l'étranger" (National association for the propagation of the French language in French territories and abroad) under the aegis of Pierre Foncin and Ambassador Paul Cambon. The Paris Alliance was created the following year by a board of directors featuring illustrious names like Jules Verne (author), Louis Pasteur (chemist and biologist), and Ferdinand de Lesseps (diplomat). The first Alliance Française abroad was created the same year in Barcelona, Spain. With support from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, it plays a key role in promoting the French language and culture abroad, working alongside French institutes and embassy cultural services. Each Alliance is part of this worldwide network but has forged strong bonds with its local cultural, educational and business communities.

The bulk of the papers comprise individually numbered research papers and notes for Gibson's post-graduate studies. The collection also includes miscellaneous research papers and lecture notes, a body of material on Papua New Guinea education in the post-war years, numbered general correspondence and copies of Gibson's theses. There are personal papers as well. Gibson kept a diary for six months in 1946 and Joan Gibson wrote in a travel diary, 1949, recording her impressions of the trip from Melbourne to Rabaul. There are also copies of letters Joan Gibson sent to family and friends in Australia while she was in Papua New Guinea in 1949-50.

Romanian material comprising letters, cuttings and documents relating to Theodore's Romanian ancestors and roots. 4. Political pamphlets: Election leaflets pertaining to Queensland and Commonwealth elections, 1916-1931, 1945. 5. Miscellaneous documents that include Australian Workers' Union tickets and volumes relating to the Allied Works Council (2 boxes, 19 fol. boxes, 1 elephant folio).
