Correspondence of Francis Macnab and family, 1839-1844

Abstract Or Scope
The collection comprises ten handwritten letters by Francis Macnab and his family members dated from 1839 to 1844. These letters provide news of a recent immigrant of his life in Australia to family members in Scotland. Six letters signed by Francis Macnab with four further letters of Macnab family correspondence. They give his social and economic impressions of the time, including the absence of women, the availability of artifacts he was sending home, (such as a Chinese mandarin's hat, a pair of Tartar women's slippers, and a pair of Chinese lady shoes), recreational activities on the Hawkesbury and in the Domain, and the economic situation. In the letters to Francis' mother contain a variety of business commentary, family communications, and observations on life in Sydney. There is also one letter written by Francis Macnab from Melbourne.

Collection comprises a diary in seven volumes, primarily written continuously by Felton Mathew from 3 August 1829-December 1835. Volume 1. Journal kept by Mathew during voyage to Australia per Morley 3 August-3 December 1829, in same volume as diary of Felton Mathew recording his surveying work in the Hawkesbury and Hunter District from 1 January 1830 to 13 September 1832. Also includes loose diary entries dated December 1829 to December 1835. The collection comprises the leather bound diary of Thomas Davies' voyage from Plymouth to Port Adelaide on the "Lord Raglan", from 27 June 1854 to 25 October 1854. The diary is accompanied with a press cutting about Thomas Davies' son, Alfred Herbert Davies, published in a local newspaper 'The Recorder', Port Pirie, South Australia, Friday Morning, December 16, 1938.

This collection comprises the papers and memorabilia of Dutch World War II veterans who migrated to Australia. This material was collected by Edith van Loo as part of the Dutch War Veterans in Australia Oral History project. The bulk of the collection comprises papers of Dutch war veteran Paul Couvret. There are also papers of Dutch war veteran Jacobus Johannes (Jack) Dalmayer, together with other material collected during the project.

The collection comprises a bound volume of a Journal of a voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne on board the ship James Booth, 19 October 1860-2 February 1861 by Claudius Beresford Cairnes. Claudius Beresford Cairnes commenced writing in the journal on 16 October 1860 whilst the ship was delayed for three days. The original journal is accompanied with a complete photocopy of the journal.

This collection primarily comprises correspondence from Peter Ryan to Graeme Sligo regarding the book "The Backroom Boys : Alfred Conlon and Army's Directorate of Research and Civil Affairs, 1942-46" written by Graeme Sligo. The book covers topics of Army Directorate of Research 1942-1946 - New Guinea, Colonel Alfred Austin Joseph Conlon, Sir Thomas Blamey, The Directorate of Research and Civil Affairs, and The Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU). There is also correspondence between Graeme Sligo and others, including Lieutenant John D. Legge AO, and Lady Meriel Wright, widow of Colonel Sir Douglas Wright, Chancellor of University of Melbourne, 1980-1989.

This collection comprises letters dating from 1985-1988 from Norman Wood to Peter Solness, following Solness' visit to Paraguay to document the survivors and descendants of the New Australia Colony, a socialist utopian settlement established by William Lane in 1893-1894. The letters describe Wood's life and his reflections on Paraguay, as well as discussing the correspondence he received from Australians after Solness published an article about the Colony.

Interspersed among the papers are documents, correspondence, printed ephemera relating to Waltzing Matilda and specifically Christina Macpherson's role in introducing A.B.Paterson to the tune for the song.

The collection also includes an alphabetical list of the Ship's Manifest, a copy of Estonia's War Children: a fractured generation, compiled and narrated by Mai Maddisson, a visitor's book from a reunion of former inhabitants of the Northam Migrant Camp in Western Australia plus material relating to Agnes Karlik's father, Gustav Kovacs, who was a pioneer of the Hungarian film industry.
