MS 7168 comprises letters to family, Australian and overseas writers, artists and others; drafts of published and unpublished works with background material (notes, photocopies and cuttings) relating to those works; and, diaries including trip diaries. Lindsay's letters are arranged chronologically with alphabetical indexes. Much of the collection comprises papers arranged by Lindsay according to his activities, especially publication projects, including books on William Blake, Gustave Courbet, William Hogarth, William Morris, and J.M.W. Turner, and interests in subjects such as alchemy, anthropology, art, Marxism and science.

Abstract Or Scope
Although there are some personal papers extending back to Else-Mitchell's childhood and early career, the great bulk of the papers held in the National Library date from the period 1974-94, when he was living in Canberra. The largest series relates to the Commonwealth Grants Commission, of which he was Chairman for 15 years, and there are also files on other agencies of the Commonwealth Government, such as the Commonwealth Legal Aid Council and the National Library. There are substantial series on the Royal Australian Institute of Public Administration, the Australian Institute of Urban Studies, the Canberra College of Advanced Education and the Royal Australian Historical Society and the collection as a whole provides a comprehensive record of Else-Mitchell's work for a great diversity of official, legal, professional, educational and cultural institutions. The papers include correspondence, diaries, reports, speeches, articles, manuscripts, cuttings, photographs, printed ephemera and publications.

They include: an account relating to part of the journey; notes on the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands, Marquesas Islands and Sandwich Islands; and a statement written by Thomas Dobson giving details of Gooch's murder in 1792 in Woahoo (Oahu).

They document: the activities of the Penang Sugar Estates Co; Penang Rubber Estates Co; Straits Sugar Co; Straits Rubber Co; Rubana Rubber Estates Co; Bagan Serai Co; Batak Rabit Estate Ltd; Selaba Rubber Estates Ltd; Tali Ayer Rubber Estates Ltd; and Sabrang Rubber Estates Ltd.
